March 2009:

A new botnet called psyb0t, thought to have originated here in Australia is the first of its kind to be able to infect routers & modems. By using security vulnerabilities and brute force attacking different brands of modems, it is able to gain access and perform tasks at the botnet creators will.

This is different to worms that infect your computer, which can be commonly detected with good antivirus software. Routers however, have no protection from attacks because they were never before targetable. This makes the worm incredibly hard to detect and remove, in fact, the only way to detect it is to manually monitor the traffic coming in and going out of the modem.

It is believed that the worm has infected up to 100'000 routers to date and targets many home versions of Netcomm, Netgear, Linksys and other DSL routers.
