Recent evidence arises that significantly more Australian confidential data has been stolen than being reported by companies

The ABC recently conducted an independent investigation into the extent of Australian’s affected by data breaches. This independant investigation uncovered evidence that at least 12 million Australians (almost half the population) have been impacted by significant data breaches.

The ABC uncovered personal, detailed and highly sensitive data available for easy purchase on the web, without even needing to traverse to the dark web. This information includes things such as ATO logins, credit card details, legal contracts, legal communication, medical information and many other types of information that could be very damaging in the hands of the wrong person. Some of this data is being sold for as little as $1 USD.

ABC suggests that based on their investigation there is significant downplaying of the extent of current breaches and likely ignorance around many breaches that have not been uncovered.
