5 Cautionary notes on making the best use of AI

  • Post category:General

Artificial Intelligence (AI) as we know it from the movies has not yet truly been achieved. We refer here of course to computers with intelligence equivalent to or exceeding the human brain. Some computers are already superior to the human mind however their ability to learn from experience and make connections based on leaps of logic isn’t quite there yet. Thankfully we are unlikely to see any ‘Terminators’ in the immediate future.

AI has however come a very long way and many readers will be familiar with the current topical Chat GPT (and even the new Google Bard). Chat GPT is a conversational AI bot that, in simple words, makes predictions of likely answers based upon answers to similar questions in the past.

Machine Learning is the scientific method of getting better at this, by getting more sources of research, tracking the questions asked and monitoring the responses to the answers it gives. All these AI’s are using machine learning to improve their usefulness directly from its many users.

Many people have started using AI tools such as Chat GPT to assist them with various business tasks, such as content generation, code manipulation, translation and repetitive task elimination.

Of course whilst AI is powerful, like any tool it can be misused and caution needs to be taken to remain safe whilst getting the most benefit.

Here are five things that you shouldn’t do when using AI to ensure you are using it safely in business:

  • Never provide personal identifying information to AI tools of yourself, your staff or your clients (ie Full name, License numbers, address details etc)
  • Avoid sharing intellectual property (IP) with AI, especially trademarked or sensitive IP
  • Never share login credentials or banking details with AI
  • Always check AI-generated content before using it (specifically for copyright and attribution requirements)
  • Never assume an answer provided by AI is 100% accurate, correct or factual

If you avoid these five pitfalls, AI can help reduce the time spent on less productive aspects of your business – leaving you more time to make your business better.
